The Stone Forest or Shilin ( Chinese: 石 林; pinyin: Shílín) is a notable set of limestone formations about 500 km 2 located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, near Shilin approximately 90 km (56 mi) from the provincial capital Kunming .
It is the only karst stone forest in a subtropical plateau region in the world. It is the essence of the world's karst geomorphology and is known as the "Stone Forest Museum" as everything is displayed in one place. The Stone Forest area is home to Naxi people and Yi people.
The stone forest is a special type of karst landform. Its towering rock pillars in high concentration (between 5 and 30m) like a forest of stones, hence the name. These rock pillars, high and strangely shaped, spread widely in an area of over 26,000ha. Only 80ha of this area are open to visitors.
