Pyle wuchs als Sohn eines Farmers in Colorado auf und war nach Abschluss der High School in unterschiedlichen Berufen tätig, unter anderem als Schlagzeuger.Ein Jurastudium brach er nach einiger Zeit ab. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges war er Seemann bei der Handelsmarine und wurde 1943 aus medizinischen Gründen aus der Marine entlassen.
