Sep 10, 2007 · Across the Universe is neither of those things. The film is wildly contrived to fit a bunch of great songs into an awkward narrative, and the way the songs are used is witless. It's so unimaginative and smugly twee that the main characters are named Lucy and Jude (of course they are). Gone are the brilliant touches of George Martin's production.
