Anyone thinking Japanese visual kei to be a strictly ‘90/2000s phenomenon needs to take just one look at Kenji Sawada to be proven otherwise. The proudly flamboyant Sawada was the first person to bring the long-running Japanese tradition of straight entertainers with a gay attitude to rock music.
As Japan's answer to David Bowie, pop icon and fashion iconoclast Kenji Sawada, a.k.a. Julie, knew how to subvert expectations. After fronting Group Sounds band The Tigers in the '60s and supergroup PYG in 1971, Sawada become a major solo artist in the late ‘70s with extravagant rock hits made all the more memorable by his androgynous flair.
