It was the runner-up for the Yale Prize for Younger Poets, and the judge, Stanley Kunitz kindly sent it to U. of Texas Press, which was starting a new poetry series, so they published it.

On the other hand, Shakespeare’s vocabulary is dated (thus the voluminous footnotes in any Shakespeare text) but his poetry needs to be immediately accessible to audience members who can’t stop the performance and study the text.
