In 2000 studeerde van Groeningen af aan het Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent (KASK) in de audiovisuele kunsten. Hij werkte als acteur, maar klapte dicht op het podium. Hij ging regisseren voor theater, maar koos toch voor film.
