Instead rent from a non airport location that isn't in a county with a major sports arena/stadium. Take an Uber/Lyft, cab to that county. Nov 9, 2019 · Things I learnt: Get a smallish car as many side streets are absolutely tiny. Google maps easily got us around Japan even though we understand little to no Japanese. Toll costs add up as we spent all up over 25,000 yen for the whole trip. Everyone speeds! Trucks, buses, cars all going easily 20km/h over the speed limit all the time.

Studying downloaded basic Japanese rules of the road and traffic signs helped. Cars rented for about $90/day, including the maximum rental agency insurance. While fuel is expensive, I drove slow in a rental with great gas milage (my 2nd rental was a hybrid), so fuel costs weren't significant.
