Re: Santa barbara mauser action Thanks ikor I picked up this rifle for a real bargain and after speaking to a few people found that it compares to the Zastava rifles which is a good ,hard working, reliable rifle.
Re: 308 Santa Barbara info needed!! I have one in .308 that i inherited and its a fantastic rifle.Hand loads or shop ammo no problem. Originally the rifle had a point where the barrel touched the stock so it would throw the odd shot but i had it bedded and now its perfect.
Mylani i think you and stefanvan are on the nose. Armed with your info i found it indeed to be a Spanish Santa Barbara action. These ones were commercial mauser actions made in 1969/70's for Parker Hale. Musgrave then bought a whole lot from PH England.
This rifle was built on a Santa Barbara action. This is basically a Spanish built version of the FN "Mauser" action, which is a much improved sporter version of the military K98. The current Zastava M70 is basically the same thing. The overall condition looks good. If the scratches don't affect the accuracy, I would not be put off by them.
Looks simmiliar to other santa barbra actions I have seen. Think is I can get it for a case of cold ones and it has probably not shot a box of ammo out of it. Problem is I already have a parker hale 243 so contemplating giving it or my PH to a mate and keeping the other.

Not much detail I can see on the pic, but from the little I can see it looks like it is built on a Santa Barbara action. This is basically a commercial FN "Mauser" action, but built by SB in Spain. AFAIK, only 1 version was built on this action, the only option being calibre.
I have worked on a few 98s but am by no means an authority. The 98 was made as the German military issue rifle from 1998 to 1945, by many factories in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. Quantities ran into millions. Was also made since 1945 by FN, Santa Barbara in Spain and possibly others. A virtual exact replica is still being made bt Zastava.
Jun 4, 2010 · The Santa Barbara actions were cast copies of the forged steel K98 actions. All actions made by the Musgrave factory itself (80,83,90) were push feeds. The serial numbers of the rifles built on surplus K98 actions usually have 98 in the number somewhere and S98 denotes a standard style stock with no cheeck piece.
.308, model 83, third rifle produced. Close the bolt of your rifle, stick the cleaning rod down the muzzle end, push it all the way down, mark the rod. pull the rod out again and watch the mark till it does a full rotation, mark it again. measure the distance between the marks and the distance from the tip of the rod to your first mark. that will give you your twist rate.
