However, in my recent re-reading of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (which is a great book that I highly recommend, by the way), I've come across a consistent use of "span" (with an "a") as the past tense of spin.

Spinned against is certainly used when it refers to political spin (=manipulation of the truth). For example, a headline from a newspaper reads "More spinned against than spinners".

It does fit in that context, but you may find it hard to visualize the action. I imagine that it looked something like this when he spun her around:

Swirled is a slower motion than a whip circling above his head. Twirled often means spinning something around an axis, as in twirling a baton or twirling your hair on a finger.
