In either case, I’d consider Thorin’s Company, Beorn, and the eagles as small auxiliary forces supporting the good guys.

Both Harry Potter and the first 2 Star Wars games had remastered versions hat combined both games in the series, and I think they could do the same for LOTR and the Hobbit. The filmmakers intended to bring The Hobbit to film and capture "the spirit" of the story. They watered everything down and padded the plotlines in order to stretch the material into three films.
