Aug 7, 2014 · In the phrase 3-month retreat, the main noun is retreat and three-month serves as an adjective (or an attributive noun, I suppose). Because it has more than one word, a hyphen is necessary to keep all the parts of that adjective together. Because it's an adjective, it remains month and not months: preceding adjectives are not inflected for number.
There is a difference between a duration period of three months as in "trimester" and an event occurring every 3 months as in "quarterly". In the same vein you would have a quadrimester or tri-annually(which means three times a year; not every 3 months) both being correct in the right context.
Oct 13, 2010 · Today is Oct. 13, 2010. It can be argued that in the last 3 months would be intuitively understood as the time frame from 8/13/2010 to 10/12/2010, while in the past three months would mean July, August, and September.

In the specific case of pregnancy the word "trimester" is used to refer to the three-month periods into which the nine-month pregnancy is divided for various monitoring purposes but this is rather different
Aug 23, 2014 · Problem is, unlike its counterparts bimonthly and biweekly, trimonthly is only defined as occurring every three months, sans a secondary three-times-a-month meaning. I would recommend thrice-monthly, if you needed to form a single word. The committee meetings will occur thrice-monthly until this matter is resolved. EDITS:

Now, purely practical, the only interpretation that makes much sense in this context is the second one.
