- Cut ‘N Shoot Review (Thom Jurek)
Cut 'n Shoot (Blue Corn) After a couple of albums of clattering rock 'n' blues, Gurf Morlix climbs aboard his tractor and takes a ride down a country road. Cut 'n Shoot finds the local guitarist and producer concentrating on the broke-down side of heartbreak performed with a honky-tonk groove that's plowed deep and wide.
While his previous recordings were saturated with loud and greasy guitars and killer bluesy riffs that provided enough good vibes to start-or end a party, this set is markedly different; it’s a solid country record, stripped to the rag and bone shop of the heart, and full of broken love songs.
Gurf Morlix is perhaps better known as the producer of roots rock greats like Lucinda Williams and Robert Earl Keen than for his own quirky, alt.-country excursions as a recording artist. On Morlix's third solo album, he eschews the dusty country rock vibe of his previous work for a blazingly authentic and stripped down country perspective.
