Rupert Julian (born Thomas Percival Hayes; 25 January 1879 – 27 December 1943) was a New Zealand cinema actor, director, writer and producer. During his career, Julian directed 60 films and acted in over 90 films. He is best remembered for directing Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera (1925).

Rupert Julian (25 January 1879 – 27 December 1943) was the first New Zealand cinema actor, director, writer and producer. Born Thomas Percival Hayes in Whangaroa, New Zealand, Son of John Daly Hayes (JNR)and Eliza Harriet Hayes.
Rupert Julian, a silent film director and producer, published a booklet in 1921 to promote his company and his work. The booklet contains his biography, publicity, and some facts about the film industry.
I became fascinated with Rupert Julian in 2002, when I first heard about him on Scott MacQueen's commentary track on the (1943!) Phantom Of The Opera DVD. He made a passing remark about the original Phantom being directed by 'the son of a New Zealand sheep farmer', and I had to pause the film to see if I could find out what he was talking about.
