Dean Leonard Buchanan (born 22 June 1952) is a New Zealand-based abstract and landscape painter. He has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand, as well as in Chile, the US, and Japan. His first solo show in 1978 was at the Outreach Gallery in Ponsonby, Auckland.
Dean Buchanan is a prominent New Zealand artist who paints bold and dynamic landscapes on canvas and hessian. He is also a mountaineer who climbed Mt Cook in 2007 and has a book about his life and work.
ABOUT. Dean Buchanan was born in 1952. As a child growing up on Auckland’s North Shore he was always busy, always drawing, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy, images from the comics, vast jigsaw puzzles always on the go.
Dean has long been transfixed by line and colour; by the complex geometries of New Zealand landscape and bush. Dean brims with energy and passion. He cycles, he walks through the bush trails of Auckland’s West Coast, he climbs mountains, and he paints landscape and still life.
