The Horse Flies are an American alternative rock/folk band, founded in the late 1970s in Ithaca, NY under the name 'Tompkins County Horseflies' by husband and wife Jeff Claus and Judy Hyman, Richie Stearns and John Hayward.
The horse fly is a type of fly that likely received its common name because it is a notorious pest of horses and other mammals. Horse flies are commonly found in both suburban and rural areas near bodies of water, which serve as breeding sites, and where mammal hosts are most abundant.
- The Tabanidae Family. The Tabanidae family of flies has over 4,000 species spread nearly globally, including both horse flies and deer flies. Tabanids are also often called clegs or gadflies, which are less common names for them.
- What Do Horse Flies Look Like? Horse flies are one of the largest flies in the world, making them easy to recognize. The bodies of horse flies are large and stocky, measuring 3/4 to 1-1/4 inches in length.
- Horse Flies vs. Deer Flies. The horsefly and the deer fly are both true members of the Tabanidae family. Their size and wings are telltale signs of the species.
- Horse flies vs. House flies. When comparing houseflies and horse flies, size is the most telling characteristic. The average length of a house fly is around a quarter of an inch, making it significantly shorter than its larger relative, the horsefly.
- Know what attracts them. When battling bothersome horse flies, it helps to understand their likes and dislikes. 'Horse flies are attracted to motion, carbon dioxide, heat, and shiny objects,' says Scot Hodges.
- Make a homemade trap. Logan Cox from John The Plumber has had to deal with horse flies in customer homes on many occasions, and says that natural home remedies, like this homemade trap, have been some of the most effective.
- Deter with essential oils. Make a homemade horse fly spray by diluting essential oils in water in a spray bottle to reduce the number of horse flies. 'Oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint are often cited as having insect-repelling properties,' says Dan Bailey from WikiLawn.
- Try store-bought solutions. Alternatively, you may prefer to manage their presence by picking up some products designed for the job. Fly traps and sticky strips are available at local garden supply stores.
