British-born Tony Hiles began working in the Kiwi screen industry in the mid 1960s. He went on to direct a run of live television, a documentary about director Peter Jackson, and an ambitious, decade-long series of films following artist Michael Smither. In 1996 he won an NZ Film Best Director award for his only feature, Jack Brown Genius.

Feb 9, 2021 · It is with regret that we record the passing of one of our colleagues, Tony Hiles. Tony arrived in Wellington from England in the mid-sixties and started making commercials for Stan Wemyss’ production house. In 1969 he moved to TVNZ to direct and produce a variety of shows – factual, magazine, and comedy.
Filmmaker Tony Hiles observes his friend Michael Smither, the painter, composer – and, in this film, singer too – as he rethinks work he deems unsuccessful and finds consolation and inspiration in poetry.
Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Tony Hiles, who passed away on 6 February. Tony was the first man to support WIFT by becoming a member back in the day.
