Michael Goldberg (December 24, 1924 – December 31, 2007) was an American abstract expressionist painter and teacher known for his gestural action paintings, abstractions and still-life paintings. A retrospective show, "Abstraction Over Time: The Paintings of Michael Goldberg", was shown at MOCA Jacksonville in Florida from 9/21/13 to 1/5/14.
Goldberg's work defies classification, having undergone numerous changes throughout his long and prolific career. He has painted dynamic, gestural canvases; monochromatic, minimalist works; grids; calligraphic images; patterned or striped paintings, and he has experimented with collage.
Biography. Born in New York City, Michael Goldberg attended the Art Students League and the City College of New York. In 1941 he began to study with Hans Hofmann, returning to his school from 1948 to 1951, where he also studied with sculptor José de Creeft, whose collage techniques were to influence Goldberg's paintings.
