This work, produced by Daniel Lanois and Mark Howard, is a balladry-like extension of her then neo-cabaret persona, interpreting songs by herself and legendary songwriters of her generation, like Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, Leonard Cohen and the songwriting duo Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
Vagabond Ways was Marianne’s first album containing original material after a 5 year gap; in between which her autobiography Faithfull was released, as well as her recording of the Kurt Weill opera The Seven Deadly Sins.
Vagabond Ways features songs Faithful co-wrote but also covers of others written by Leonard Cohen, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters and Lanois. When released in 1999, Vagabond Ways was not the success that it deserved to be , but it holds up 23 years after it was initially released.

Feb 9, 2022 · BMG has announced the reissuing of Marianne Faithfull’s 1999 album ‘ Vagabond Ways ‘ on March 4th. The reissue, originally recorded at Teatro Studios in California and produced by Mark Howard and Daniel Lanois, will include a selection of previously unreleased bonus demos and an unheard studio recording, plus new liner notes.
