Feb 24, 2023 · Tung Chao-yung, also known as C.Y. Tung, was a Chinese shipping magnate who founded the Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). He owned a shipping fleet with over 150 freight ships, and his fleet's cargo capacity exceeded 10 million tons.
The founder of OOCL, the late C Y Tung, dreamed of creating the first international Chinese merchant fleet. In 1947, he achieved that dream when the first ship with an all-Chinese crew reached the Atlantic coast of the USA and Europe.
Founder of Orient Overseas, Tung Chao-yung, operated the first all-Chinese crewed ship between Hong Kong and Europe and the east coast of the United States in 1947. However, Tung Chao-yung already established his Hong Kong operation in 1937. He was the vice-president of Shipowners Association in Tianjin at that time.
