Jan 1, 1987 · Album review "Raga" trumpeter Jon Hassell's The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound utilizes the core ensemble of players previously heard on Power Spot, but with quite different results. Surgeon of the Nightsky is considerably more ambient and less rhythmically animated than its predecessor.

'The Surgeon...' opens with its most considerable track, the 20-minute 'Ravinia/Vancouver'. Hassell's distinctive, wave-y trumpet sound - that he developed under Indian raga master Pandit Pran Nath - is initially the primary focus here, curling over quieted, tuned percussion and pliant synths.
