In 18th-century Italy, a duke is being slowly poisoned by his treacherous advisor, Count Astolfo. The duke's son, Marco, and his friend, Andrea, are returning home with documentary proof of the count's treachery but are captured; Marco is put into an iron mask but not before he has hidden the document.
