James Ruffin Webb (October 4, 1909 – September 27, 1974) was an American screenwriter. He was best known for writing the screenplay for the film How the West Was Won (1962), which garnered widespread critical acclaim and earned him an Academy Award .

Dr James R Webb is currently a full professor of physics and Director of the Stocker Astroscience Center at Florida International University (FIU). He received his bachelor's degree in physics at Ball State University, and his masters and PhD in astronomy at the University of Florida.
