The band continued the whimsical streak demonstrated on Now We Are Six by inviting comedian and actor Peter Sellers to play the ukulele on the closing track, 'New York Girls'. The band decided that it wanted a ukulele on the song, but no one in the band knew anyone who played the instrument.

And sure enough, in strides Steeleye's manager Jo Lustig, followed by the man himself - Peter Sellers. The introductions are formal and polite, Steeleye look in awe at Sellers. This is, really the man who had them all on their backs laughing, The Pink Panther, The Wrong Arm of the Law, The Man with a Girl in his Soup.
The attempts at humour continued on Commoners Crown (1975), which included Peter Sellers playing electric ukulele on the final track, "New York Girls". Their seventh album also included the epic ballad "Long Lankin" and novelty instrumental "Bach Goes To Limerick".

Dec 30, 2023 · Steeleye Span recorded New York Girls with guest Peter Sellers (who played ukulele and went goon on the lines quoted in brackets) for their 1975 album Commoners Crown. The verses are very similar to the version in Stan Hugill’s book Shanties From the Seven Seas, p. 283, titled The New York Gals.
