The 12th Academy Awards ceremony, held on February 29, 1940 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best in film for 1939 at a banquet in the Coconut Grove at The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. [1] It was hosted by Bob Hope, in his first of nineteen turns as host.

The Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay is the Academy Award (also known as an Oscar) for the best screenplay not based upon previously published material. It was created in 1940 as a separate writing award from the Academy Award for Best Story .
A new category was added: Writing: Original Screenplay. Independent producer David O. Selznick, who had produced the previous year's big winner Gone With The Wind (1939) , also produced the Best Picture winner in 1940 - and campaigned heavily for its win.
In the first ceremony (1927–28), an award was given for best original story; an award for title writing was also given. A story was a prose narration of the action in the film that typically would later be converted to a screenplay by another screenwriter.
The Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay is the Academy Award for the best script not based upon previously published material. Before 1940, there was an Academy Award for Best Story for writing.
