John Kobal (born Iwan Kobal; 30 May 1940 – 28 October 1991) was an Austrian-born British based film historian responsible for The Kobal Collection, a commercial photograph archive related to the film industry.
He is of a generation of South African photographers who were “born free” after the first democratic elections of 1994.

The John Kobal Foundation was set up to continue the work of its eponymous founder, who lived from 1940–1991. The foundation long divided its efforts between grant-making for photographers and promoting the photography collection that Kobal had amassed, which traces the history of Hollywood from approximately 1916 to the late twentieth century.
John Kobal was very keen to find a way in which he could see his own enthusiasm for photography continued after his death. In 1990 he formed The John Kobal Foundation as a charity to which he donated the photographic negatives and fine art photographs that he had collected over the years.
