Together, Pink, Cusack and DeVincentis formed a production company, New Crime Productions, which produced both Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. In 2010, he directed Hot Tub Time Machine, and its sequel Hot Tub Time Machine 2 in 2015. He was also a producer on the 20th Century Fox release Knight and Day, starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

- Kimi. Zoe Kravitz plays an agoraphobic tech worker in this clean, tight Steven Soderbergh film set just after the pandemic. Angela (Kravitz) works for a company that makes Amazon Alexa-like devices (the virtual assistant’s name is Kimi), and, when listening to recordings of people’s requests to assess the AI’s responses to them, plays a file that seems to be a recording of a murder.
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This is the big one—the Mona Lisa of 2022’s crime films. I’m wincing at this metaphor, but anyway… after a torturous hiatus, the drawling gentleman sleuth Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is back on another humdinger of a case, and man, is it a delightful time.
- Vengeance. B.J. Novak’s Vengeance, a movie he wrote, directed, and stars in, is extremely smart—maybe too smart for its own good, at times. It is the story of a snobbish NYC-based writer looking to break into the world of podcasting who travels to Texas after a woman he hooked up with once is found dead.
- The Batman. SPEAKING of “vengeance”… I know there are a lot (a LOT) of Batman movies out there and some are really fantastic, but Matt Reeves’s new film is my favorite of them all, and one of the most entrancing films of this year.
- An annual talent show at Evanston Township High School bonded the movie’s three screenwriters. While attending the school together, D.V. DeVincentis, Steve Pink, and John Cusack were involved in the talent show, YAMO (which is still held today).
- Learning the Biograph Theater’s history on the spot led to one of the movie’s most iconic lines. DeVincentis recalls pointing out the little alley next to the theater in Lincoln Park and telling director Stephen Frears that it was where John Dillinger was shot to death.
- A Chicago music legend helped design Championship Vinyl. DeVincentis was close friends with Dan Koretzky, founder of the local record label Drag City, which has produced records for Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Bill Callahan, Joanna Newsom, and Silver Jews.
- The shop-lifting punks are from Second City. Characters Vince and Justin — “those little skate fuckers” — were played by Ben Carr and Chris Rehmann. They were taking classes at Second City (separately) while the film was casting.
