Imo Doe or Die is on par with Reasonable Doubt and Cuban Linx, so yeah it can be mentioned in the same breath as Illmatic even though I do think there is separation between the two.

The general public first heard AZ in 1994 on Nas’ classic debut LP Illmatic, but AZ (real name Anthony Cruz) had already been honing his craft as a lyricist for 5 years by then, under the watchful eyes of Pete Rock and his manager/associate Damian “Deo” Blyden.
Nas appears, singing the chorus, with an off key yet undeniably catchy appeal. AZ flips the multi-syllables he's known for, spitting about stacking dollars and selling drugs. While the subject matter might be common place these days, back in 1995 living it up Scarface style was not the norm in 1995.
