Born in Naples, the son of Giuseppe De Curtis and Elisabetta Minnon, he was a great-grandson of composer Saverio Mercadante and the brother of poet Giambattista De Curtis, with whom he wrote the song "Torna a Surriento".

    Era figlio di Giuseppe ed Elisabetta Minnon e pronipote del celebre musicista Saverio Mercadante. Studiò pianoforte e si diplomò al Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella. Scrisse la musica (con il fratello Giambattista, poeta e pittore, che ne curò il testo) della celeberrima canzone Torna a Surriento.

    Tra il 1897 fino alla morte nel 1937scrisse centinaia di canzoni. Tra le sue composizioni più famose, si ricordano: 1. Tu ca nun chiagne 2. Voce 'e notte 3. Ti voglio tanto bene 4. Non ti scordar di me 5. Mandulinata 6. Duorme Carmé. 7. Torna a Surriento
