Gilera is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer founded in Arcore in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera (1887–1971). In 1969, the company was purchased by Piaggio.
Gilera was established in 1909 by Giuseppe Gellera who at the time had a workshop in Milan, but shortly after, relocated to Arcore. In the years following the First World War, Gilera manufactured 500cc motorbikes with side valves, winning the most prestigious international competitions.
At the age of 22 in 1909 Guiseppe Gilera built the first motorcycle of his own design in a small shop in Milan. He won the same year a hill-climbing race with this machine. In 1911 he started a modest Gilera racing team and participated in many regional races.
