In 1954 the band recorded "Mardi Gras Mambo" with Neville on vocals. The song gained popularity and became a New Orleans carnival anthem. The band toured with Larry Williams. Neville performed regularly in New Orleans, joined the U.S. Navy in 1958, and returned to music in 1962.
Jul 23, 2019 · 'Mardi Gras Mambo' was originally written as a country song by Frankie Adams and Lou Welsch, and performed by singer Jody Levens. But the year after Levens' version, Neville's teenage band The Hawketts cut a version that became a hit in their home city and remains an anthem at Mardi Gras time.
