大阪放送劇団 付属研究所9期生。 1981年 、『 ガキ帝国 』（ 井筒和幸 監督）で映画デビュー。 その後、数々の映画、ドラマに出演。 1989年『 ブラック・レイン 』にヤクザ役で出演、 リドリー・スコット 監督と 松田優作 から映画俳優としての表現について影響を受けた [6] [7] 。 ブラックレインへの出演後に 香港 の映画関係者からオファーが増えて数本の映画に出演した [8] 。 1997年 、 河瀨直美 監督が 第50回カンヌ国際映画祭 で日本人初の カメラ・ドール を受賞した『 萌の朱雀 』では田原孝三役で映画初主演。 長らく映画中心の活動をしており、 阪本順治 や 崔洋一 の作品には常連出演している。
