    Ruth Mary Holden (born 9th February 1929 in Lancaster, died 29th November 2001 in Manchester) appeared on Coronation Street irregularly between December 1960 and January 1967 as the ill-fated Vera Lomax, daughter of the formidable Ena Sharples. She had auditioned for the part of Ida Barlow and played the character in the first of the dry runs but the role eventually went to Noel Dyson.

    She also appeared in the Street spin-off Pardon the Expression.

    She went to stage school at the age of 16 and made her television debut in 1958 and other roles included regular characters on How We Used to Live and The Cedar Tree as well as performances in, amongst other programmes, Crossroads, Doctor in the House, The Dustbinmen, On the Buses, Z Cars, The Fenn Street Gang, Follyfoot, Sam, Juliet Bravo, Brookside, Emmerdale Farm, The Return of the Antelope , Cracker, All Creatures Great and Small, and Last of the Summer Wine.

    An early stage role was in Unseen Amongst Us in 1956 in London. Radio work includes Black Spot on the Mersey, Wonderful Amy, Midweek Theatre, Afternoon Theatre, Saturday Night Theatre, We All Come To It In The End and Crazy Big Fish.
