IHC scores 0 and 1+ are considered HER2 negative. IHC 1+ is defined as faint, barely perceptible membranous reactivity in >10% of tumour cells. IHC 0 is defined as no reactivity or membranous reactivity in <10% of tumour cells.

HER2 is a protein that helps breast cancer cells grow quickly. Breast cancer cells with higher than normal levels of HER2 are called HER2-positive. These cancers tend to grow and spread faster than breast cancers that are HER2-negative, but are much more likely to respond to treatment with drugs that target the HER2 protein.

HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) is a protein. Some breast cancer cells have a higher than normal level of HER2 on their surface, which helps them to grow. This is known as HER2-positive breast cancer. Less than 1 in 5 invasive breast cancers are HER2-positive.
