SMU receives S$20 million landmark gift from family of the late Dr Yong Pung How. Singapore Management University (SMU) has received a significant gift of S$20 million towards the Yong Pung How School of Law (YPHSL).
Learning at the Yong Pung How School of Law extends beyond the classroom. Our students learn about how the law works in real life through internships with law firms, government bodies, and legal departments in other institutions.
SMU Yong Pung How School of Law traces its origins to 2000. Then, its predecessor, the Law Department within the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, was created and headed by Professor Andrew Phang (presently Judge of Appeal).
The Yong Pung How School of Law is one of the six schools of the Singapore Management University. It was set up as Singapore's second law school in 2007, 50 years after the NUS Faculty of Law and 10 years before SUSS School of Law.
At the Yong Pung How School of Law, students perform legal community service pro bono publico (for the public good). Through our pro bono programme, students learn that the practice of law is a calling that brings with it opportunities to serve the community using their skills and knowledge.
Apr 8, 2021 · The new name – Yong Pung How School of Law (杨邦孝法学院) – will come into effect from 11 April 2021, which would have been Dr Yong’s 95th birthday. The ceremony, which was graced by The Honourable the Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon as its Guest-of-Honour, was attended by over 200 guests, in-person and online.
