The company was founded by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet in the Vallée de Joux in 1875, acquiring the name Audemars Piguet & Cie in 1881. The company has been family-owned since its founding.

They do not specify whether LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin or Audemars Piguet first launched the idea of Calibre 2120, but they suggest that it was the Manufacture in Le Brassus that took the lead.

Audemars Piguet joined forces with LeCoultre & Cie to adapt the mechanism – with the latter company manufacturing the gold oscillating weight, while the Le Brassus watchmakers were responsible for assembly, finishing and casing-up. The majority of the approximately 4,000 units produced between 1976 and 1980 were cased up in Model 8638.
