Paul Felix von Weingartner, Edler von Münzberg was an Austrian conductor, composer and pianist. He was born in Zara, Dalmatia, Austria-Hungary to Austrian parents, and the family moved to Graz in 1868. His father died that same year.
Born in 1863, Felix Weingartner succeeded Mahler as head of the Vienna State Opera and enjoyed a three-decade-long relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic in addition to guest-conducting throughout Europe. This set reissues recordings made between 1936 and 1940, when the conductor was in his late 70s, an age belied by the performances’ vigor.
