Gu Changwei (born 12 December 1957) is a Chinese cinematographer and film director. Gu was born in Xi'an, Shaanxi in the People's Republic of China. Gu is considered one of the major Chinese cinematographers working today.
Gu Changwei may have produced some of China’s biggest films, but he’s never been as famous as film school classmates Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige. With his star-studded Aids drama Love for Life in cinemas now, Nicola Davison meets the unassuming director.
Gu Chang Wei was born in the Old Capitol of China, Xi’an. He was interested in the arts at an early age. He took up painting while at school and excelled at it. In 1978, his teachers encouraged him to apply at the Xian Art Institute but his true passion emerged when the Beijing Film Academy came the same year to recruit for prospective students.
The Chinese mainland director Gu Changwei"s movie Love for Life (Zuiai 2011) is an emotionally touching and politically sensitive story about a group of AIDS patients. During the past decade there have been a number of mainland produced films and TV serials that have dealt with this theme.
