Plot. Ex- opera singer Helen Lorfield Winter ( Jeanette MacDonald) rents a house in the small town of Brushy Gap, in the hills not too far from the Smokies, Blue Ridge, and Atlanta Georgia with her dog, Lassie, after the tragic death of her son. There she befriends Jerry, a young orphan ( Claude Jarman Jr. ).
The Sun Comes Up: Directed by Richard Thorpe. With Jeanette MacDonald, Lloyd Nolan, Claude Jarman Jr., Lewis Stone. Set in the rural south of the United States, a bereaved war widow learns to to put aside her bitterness and grief as she grows to love a young orphan boy and the dog that belonged to her late son.

After driving along the California coast, Helen arrives at the small town of Brushy Gap, where she rents a mountain house owned by writer Thomas I. Chandler. The house is managed by the town's general store proprietor, Willie B. Williegoode, who tries to acquaint Helen with the rural lifestyle.

The Sun Comes Up is a 1949 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Technicolor picture with Lassie. Jeanette MacDonald had been off the screen for five years until her return in Three Daring Daughters (1948), but The Sun Comes Up was to be her last.
