Returning to the smaller-scale storytelling of Has’s earlier films and working from a story by Anton Chekhov, this intimate yet kaleidoscopic film follows an aging medical professor as he looks back on the events of his life, ruminating on its myriad frustrations and lingering regrets.
A terminally-ill medicine professor conducts his own intellectual and moral analysis. His relatives and students irritate him, philosophy disappoints him. The only person close to him is his former student, an actress. The woman, despite her young age, struggles with the same problem of existence.
