Pilot Sean Pachowski flies a chartered light aircraft to a dig site. On board are paleontologyprofessor Mugford, his assistant Chandra, and students Trina, Kelly, and Deke. When the plane into a meteor showerand a larger one hits the ground right in front of the machine, Sean loses control and crashes in an uninhabited area. All occupants survive relatively unharmed and set off in search of a shelter for the night. They find what appears to be an abandoned farm, where they lodge. Shortly thereafter, farmer Moses Cobb, the owner of the house, comes along and wants to catch the alleged burglars. After the situation is explained to him, he leads Professor Mugford's group into the barn to show them a dead specimen of a giant spider that Moses' grandfather is said to have displayed alive at county fairs. The animal is dismissed by Mugford as a fake.

At night, Trina and Kelly see a giant spider appearing outside their window, and Moses also sees what he identifies as such. The next morning, Sean and Moses set out to investigate the impact crater of the meteorite that crashed the plane. Once there, they realize that an underground cave system was uncovered by the impact. As they go to investigate the cave, they are attacked by a giant spider that pulls Moses inside the cave. Sean escapes back into the house, where the group tries to barricade themselves. Deke is attacked and killed by the monsters while trying to get the professor out of the barn. The others entrench themselves with guns, dynamite and Molotov cocktailsarmed, in the house. At night, they are attacked by large numbers of the giant spiders. Most attackers can be killed or chased away. However, a spider manages to get into the house underground and kidnap Kelly. The professor suspects that Kelly is used as a living host by the giant spiders.

The group sets out to rescue Kelly. Chandra calls her father, Colonel Weaver, beforehand and pretends to have been molested by the professor. She wants to get him to come to them with this story because she thinks he would dismiss the story about the giant spiders as a fairy tale. When they reach the cave, Sean, Chandra, and Trina head inside while the professor tries to escape. However, he is caught by the monster spiders after only a few meters. Meanwhile, inside the cave, the other three discover an even larger specimen of the spiders, which they call the queenidentify that is about to lay eggs. Trapped in a giant spider web, they discover Moses and Kelly. When Sean Kelly cuts loose, Moses' body rips apart and countless tiny spiders come out. Sean, Chandra and Trina flee outside with Kelly, where Chandra's father has already arrived with an army unit. The soldiers storm the cave and destroy the monsters and their queen.

When the army withdraws and all spiders are said to have been destroyed, several smaller specimens crawl out of the ground not far from the destroyed cave.
