Rotaie could be considered one of the last silent Italian films as well as one of the first talkies. The few lines of dialogue and sound, however, were added after the movie was done. It was conceived of as a narrative of images.

Wrong! Because this afternoon at the BFI Southbank we were privileged to see a rare screening of Rotaie (Rails), a stunning example of formative Italian neo-realism directed by Mario Camerini and made in 1929. The film ticks virtually all of the neo-realist boxes.
