In 1944, on the island of Porto Pim, in the Azores, whale hunter Lucas is engaged to marry his sweetheart Maria. Then sophisticated Parisian Lucia arrives, on her way to America, and Lucas falls in love. Though Lucia's time there is short, the two embark on an ill-fated affair.
