Plot. In two volumes, The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of the 19th Century tells the story of Julien Sorel's life in France's rigid social structure restored after the disruptions of the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte . Book I.

Synopsis. Moving right along in two 100-minute installments Jean-Daniel Verhaeghe’s 1997 adaptation of Stendahl’s Le rouge et le noir(red for a military career, black for a career in the church) illustrates the plot and, to a surprising degree, the characters of the 500-page 1830 novel.
