A by-product of the dramatic growth of the cattle business in the latter part of the nineteenth century, cow towns flourished from 1867 until the 1890s when railroads ended the necessity for long cattle drives. The first of what became the stereotypical cow town was Abilene, Kansas.
Cow towns (or cattle towns) were towns that grew up around the transcontinental railroad. They were a hub for transporting cattle on the railway to the markets of the east. Why were the cow towns considered lawless?
Often referred to (less respectfully) as "cow towns," cattle towns were small frontier settlements whose entrepreneurial existence depended heavily on the trade in free-range cattle. A typical cattle town lay at the junction of railroad and livestock trail.
