Set in military barracks in a small town during World War I. The soldiers herded in the barracks are ‘politically suspect’ mix of characters from all over of the Austro-Hungarian Empire: Czechs, Jews, and even Italians, but officers in charge are Germans.

The main character in the film is the Pole Jan Kaniowski - otherwise known as Kania - who is played by veteran Polish actor Marek Kondrat. Kondrat's career has been as long and as prolific as Majewski's.
Based on a novel of the same name by Kazimierz Sejda, C.K. dezerterzy (known as "H.M. Deserters" in English) is a Polish film telling of the misadventures of a quintet of Austro-Hungarian soldiers during World War I.
H.M. DESERTERS. This fantastic comedy begins when a bunch of "politically suspected" soldiers of the Austrian-Hungarian empire, whose job it is to guard a camp for Italian POW's, desert from their duties. A long string of adventures soon follows. In Polish with English subtitles.
