Until 2019, the event was the final leg of the Triple Crown of Surfing and the final event on the WSL Championship Tour. Starting with the 2021 season (December 2020), the event is now the opening event of a 2020–21 competition season.
The Pipe Masters is the most prestigious surf contest in the world. The event takes place at Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, in Hawaii. It is one of the 36 surf spots of the so-called Seven Mile Miracle, a seven-mile (11.2 kilometers) stretch of sandy surf beaches.
