  3. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile.

  4. They do not have a misunderstanding (John 5:39–40). Jesus is insisting that the Pharisees have spoken evil out of evil hearts. That's how it always works: what's inside one's heart eventually manifests in actions and words (Matthew 12:34). The previous verse ended with that very principle: what's inside overflows and spills out into the world.
