Although contemplative in spirit, “Anima” (Mo Er Dao Ga, a recent acquisition of Fortissimo Films) gives this sense of urgency that comes with the awareness of how inevitable and grave are the implications of its matter.
Having first reached the festival circuit in December 2020 at the Cairo International Film Festival, the Mainland Chinese entry for competition at this year’s NYAFF is Anima: the prestige, internationally-oriented “issues” film of the year and directorial debut of newcomer Cao Jinling.
Overview. After young Tutu kills a bear to save his little brothers life, he is considered an outcast as bears are sacred to the Lonki tribe. Years later Tutu and Linzi struggle to get by and work as lumberjacks near the forest they grew up in. When they both fall for the same woman, it drives the brothers apart.
