Kundun is a 1997 American epic biographical film written by Melissa Mathison and directed by Martin Scorsese. It is based on the life and writings of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, the exiled political and spiritual leader of Tibet.
The film tells the story of the Dalai Lama, from his childhood recognition as the reincarnation of the Buddha, to his escape from Tibet and his exile in India. It also depicts his encounters with the Chinese leader Mao and his visions of the Tibetan people's suffering.
