Citizens of San Francisco are stunned by the news that Robert Ironside, the city's hard-nosed, tough-talking chief of detectives, has been shot and left for dead while vacationing at his friend the Police Commissioner's rural retreat.
Robert Ironside, Chief of Detectives for the San Francisco Police Department, is shot by an unseen sniper while on vacation on a farm owned by his friend and superior, Police Commissioner Randall. His unconscious body is discovered the next morning and he is rushed away in an ambulance.
When an assassin's bullet confines him to a wheelchair for life ending his career as Chief of Detectives, Robert T. Ironside becomes a consultant to the police department. Detective Sergeant Ed Brown and policewoman Eve Whitfield join with him to crack varied and fascinating cases.
